With tiny unlabel, our idea is to publish tiny books and small-format CDs. The mini CD has a runtime of 20 minutes. To explore and understand the technical requirements for producing a small CD, we recorded a 20-minute piece together as a test - but also as a work in itself. Since we live in different countries, our chosen method for creating music was simple: each of us independently recorded a 20-minute segment without knowing what the others were doing. We then layered all the recordings on top of each other to create the final sound piece. The following text is a short reflection upon this working process and its outcome.
- Angie, Levin, Kevin
I am singing with ghosts. Chanting with memories. Imagining the voices of my friends. Imagining their actions. Tiny body movements. To sound. Remembering. Listening to a warm night in a small village years ago. Listeningto a stream. Listening the water flowing. Listening a tiny waterfall. A night walk through the cemetery. The ghosts rising. And later. Listening to a warm evening in a town. Shared drinks at an empty street. Planting trust in a tram ride. Then, singing. Then, listening. Unleashing spooky action at a distance. Our voices traveling through the same rhythm. Quantum entanglement. Recordings of travels to Japan and Korea. Visiting friends. Another type of memory. Also, chanting with them. And again. The water flowing.
Is it possible to play music together from afar? Is it possible to play with the absence of others? Doing this music I discovered that friendship enables sound to travel infinite miles towards closeness. I remember my friends' sounds and silences and I let them guide my movements or stillness. This way, they were present in my house. We were together again, walking in the forest, at dark. Listening to water. Playing tiny sounds in a cozy concert. Joking around. Laughing. When you can listen to your friends inside you, no absence or distance longer exists.
I like to think I carry my loved ones with me wherever I go. How can we make new work while apart? Drawing upon memories, feelings, sensations from previous journeys and experiences to create something. Collaboration across time and space; traversing sound, silence, and friendship.
